Information about Japanese encephalitis
Japanese encephalitis (JE) occurs endemically in the whole of Asla and is the most common viral encephalitis with approx. 50.000 cases reported every Year. Infection leads to disease in up to 2 % of the cases. The disease is very serious with approx. 25 % lethality and permanent lessons in approx. 30 % of the cases. It has not been clarified what her clinical disease will give life-long immunity.
The disease is caused by an arbovirus and the most important reservoirs are hogs and birds.
Humans are infected by mosquito-bites. In temperate areas, the greatest risk for transmission occurs from April until October. In subtropical and tropical areas, the risk pattern is influenced by a number of factors; the presence of mosquitoes, the presence of reservoir animals, seasonal rain periods, and migration patterns of reservoir birds. In certain countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, there is a risk throughout the year. The greatest risk is in the country-side, whenever sweet water pools and Irrigation water is present. There is a risk also in the slum areas of the big cities.
